Exhibit of John F. Gould’s
American Revolutionary War Historic Paintings
At the Newburgh Free Library, Newburgh, NY
Artist John F. Gould( 1906-1996) painted 3 historic and magnificent scenes depicting the end of the American Revolutionary War 1782-83 in the Vails Gate , New Windsor and Newburgh area.
The Newburgh Free Library and Legacy Art of John F. Gould are pleased to announce the exhibit titled Newburgh And The Nation: The Art Of John F. Gould
Featured in the exhibit are original paintings, the Last Great March 1782, Last Cantonment 1782-83 and Peace -1783 A Nation is Born. These scenes illustrate the March from Fort Putman north thru Vails Gate of approximately 10,000 soldiers. The next is the winter encampment at the New Windsor Cantonment where Washington felt the war was over but wanted to keep the troops in reserve. Finally in the spring of 1783 at Newburgh, Washington declares the cessation of hostilities and awards the first Purple Heart at this site. The national Purple Heart Museum is now located at the New Windsor Cantonment, New Windsor, NY.
The exhibit of the original art will begin on Thursday October 16, 2025 with an opening reception from 6 to 8 pm at the Newburgh Free Library, 124 Grand St. Newburgh, New York. The exhibit will run until October 2027.
The artwork is outstanding and gives added dimension to the role New York played in the War of Independence.
