The Artist
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1906, John F. Gould studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and went on to become one of his generation's most versatile artists — illustrating for the Saturday Evening Post for more than eight years, consulting for General Electric for over two decades, and producing a body of fine art that spans oils, acrylics, watercolors, and pen-and-ink originals.
His deep fascination with the Hudson River Valley and the founding story of America produced some of the most vivid historical paintings of the twentieth century. In 1957, he and his wife Mary established the Bethlehem Art Gallery in Cornwall, NY.

Three major works depicting events from 1782–1783 in the Vails Gate, New Windsor, and Newburgh areas. These paintings illustrate the conclusion of the American Revolutionary War, including the march of approximately 10,000 soldiers and Washington's historic declaration of peace.
