Newburgh and the Nation: The Art of John F. Gould

Newburgh Free Library — 124 Grand St, Newburgh, New York 12550

October 16, 2025 — October 2027

This landmark two-year exhibition features three major works from Gould's American Revolutionary War series, depicting events from 1782–1783 in the Vails Gate, New Windsor, and Newburgh areas. The paintings illustrate the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, including the march of approximately 10,000 soldiers and Washington's historic declaration of the cessation of hostilities — where he also awarded the first Purple Heart.

Featured works: The Last Great March (1782), The Last Cantonment (1782–83), and Peace 1783 — A Nation is Born.

Opening reception was held Thursday, October 16, 2025, 6:00–8:00 PM. The exhibition remains on view during regular library hours.
